What to Expect

OGAWNY’s Dr. Amber Krol, Dr. Taylor Johnson, and Dr. Jennifer Rojek will be speaking at the event. 

This event is open to everyone–including moms, dads, grandparents, adoptive parents, caregivers, and anyone with a baby in their life or on the way. The goal is to facilitate valuable conversations to help answer questions, resolve fears, and prepare parents for the wonderful journey that comes with having and raising a new baby.

-Jamie Grayson & Baby Registry Lab: Baby gear expert and child passenger safety technician Jamie Grayson will be on hand to answer questions and give demonstrations of proper safety gear. Join Jamie from 3-4 pm for her baby registry lab, where you can learn about baby gear like car seats, strollers, and more. 

-Exhibitors & Vendors: A number of businesses and brands will be on hand to curate relationships and provide support and resources for attendees. 

-Educational Sessions & Demonstrations: from classroom-style workshops to hands-on seminars, there are a number of exciting, informative ways to learn the ins and outs of pregnancy and parenting, like birthing plans, baby’s first foods, and more.

Before coming to OGAWNY, Dr. Frauenheim earned her undergraduate degree in neuroscience from Columbia University, after which she attended the Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences at the University at Buffalo, where she graduated Magna Cum Laude and received the prestigious David H. Nichols Award, which recognizes excellence in gynecologic surgery. She then completed her residency training at the University of Buffalo. 

Dr. Frauenheim has a passion for all aspects of women’s health and obstetrics and looks forward to closely following the well-being of her patients. She specializes in gynecologic and minimally invasive surgery. 

She lives in Kenmore with her husband and two dogs, and in her free time, she enjoys baking, exercising, and spending time on the lake.

Before joining Great Lakes Cancer Care Collaborative, Dr. Reyes completed his undergraduate and medical degrees at the University of the Philippines, his residency at the University of Buffalo, and a Master’s and fellowship at the University of Iowa. 

Dr. Reyes is a Clinical Assistant Professor in Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of Buffalo and Associate Program Director for the Minimally Invasive Gynecologic Surgery Fellowship for Kaleida Health and the University of Buffalo.

Before coming to Great Lakes Cancer Care, Dr. Tambar obtained her undergraduate, medical degree, and residency here in Western New York at the University of Buffalo before completing a fellowship specializing in breast surgical oncology at Georgetown University. Following her fellowship, Dr. Tambar additionally served as a breast surgeon and director of The Breast Center in Central California. 

Board-certified and fellowship-trained in treating all diseases of the breast, Dr. Tambar also teaches medical students and residents as a Clinical Associate Professor at the University of Buffalo. 

Dr. Tambar is thrilled to be back in what she considers to be her hometown of Buffalo and looks forward to sharing her passion for women’s health in the community that made her who she is today. When she’s not at work, Dr. Tambar enjoys running, cooking, and spending time with her husband and children.

Dr. Johnson joined our provider team in August 2021. The Panama, N.Y. native attended Baldwin Wallace University, graduating Summa Cum Laude while studying Neuroscience and Chemistry before completing medical school at the University of Buffalo and completing residency training in Buffalo, where she developed an interest in GYN surgery. 

Dr. Johnson is a recipient of The Excellence in Minimally Invasive Gynecology Award and has a passion for obstetrics. She enjoys getting to know her patients throughout their pregnancy and in her spare time, Dr. Johnson enjoys teaching fitness classes, hiking, exploring Buffalo cuisine, and chasing after her three children.

PA Phillips has worked in women’s health since 1999 and especially enjoys working with women of all ages to improve their quality of life. She believes a focus on patient education is the key to providing better health care. Outside of the office, she remains active as a student mentor and clinical lecturer.

Currently, available data suggests that symptomatic pregnant patients with COVID-19 are at increased risk of more severe illness compared with non-pregnant peers.

Even though the risk for severe COVID-19 is low, these data indicate an increased risk of need for ICU admission and ventilatory support in pregnant women with symptomatic COVID-19 infection, when compared with symptomatic non-pregnant females. Pregnant patients with comorbidities such as obesity and diabetes may be at an even higher risk of severe illness consistent with the general population with similar comorbidities.

Vaccine

COVID-19 vaccine development and regulatory approvals are moving rapidly. Consequently, information and recommendations will evolve and be updated as more data is collected about these vaccines and their use in specific populations. Pregnant patients were not part of the initial COVID-19 studies.

On December 11, 2020, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued an Emergency Use Authorization (EUA) for the Pfizer-BioNtech mRNA vaccine (BNT162b2) for use in individuals age 16 years and older as a 2-dose regimen given 3 weeks apart. This vaccine has shown to be 95% effective at preventing COVID-19 illness after the second dose.

Vaccination During Pregnancy

The current vaccine is a mRNA vaccine, not a live virus vaccine. It does not use an adjuvant to enhance vaccine efficacy. These vaccines do not enter the inside of the human cells and it does not alter human DNA in vaccine recipients. As a result, mRNA vaccines cannot cause any genetic changes.

ACOG recommends that COVID-19 vaccines should not be withheld from pregnant individuals who meet criteria for vaccination based on ACIP-recommended priority groups.

Breastfeeding

COVID-19 vaccines should be offered to lactating individuals similar to non-lactating individuals when they meet criteria for receipt of the vaccine based on prioritization groups outlined by the ACIP. If you received the vaccine before pregnancy or during pregnancy, you may still breastfeed.

OB/GYN Associates of WNY (OGA) has made a great deal of changes this past year. They have added numerous new providers, new services and even a new office location.

Dr. Alan Bolnick has joined his brother, Dr. Jay Bolnick, at the practice. Both doctors are board certified in Maternal Fetal Medicine and Reproductive Endocrinology. Together they will be offering patients a number of services, including innovative high-risk pregnancy care, infertility testing, intrauterine insemination and in-vitro fertilization.

Maureen Ryan has joined the practice as a nurse practitioner. Maureen brings sexual wellness counseling to an immeasurable list of services. In addition, OGA now offers nutrition care with Registered Dietician Natalie Robertello. Natalie also offers pregnancy nutrition classes at the Transit Road location.

OB/GYN Associates is the only private practice in Western New York to offer a Baby Café. Mothers and mothers-to-be, along with their families, are welcomed every Thursday at 6:00 pm at the Orchard Park Road location to receive support and advice about breastfeeding from other moms and a Certified Lactation Consultant.

A new sonogram wing at the Orchard Park Road location will feature a separate entrance, separate waiting area and a separate check-in/checkout counter.

OGA continues to recruit new staff members and advance their provider-patient relationships in order to increase and improve services. New physicians Dr. Farkad Balaya and Dr. Lynn-Marie Aronica have settled in at the newest location on Delaware Avenue in Buffalo. OGA looks forward to welcoming additional accomplished and capable providers in the upcoming months as well as offering patients a wide variety of options in their obstetrical and gynecological care.
